Sprague Energy Terminal

The Sprague Energy Terminal at Mack Point in Searsport handles bulk and liquid cargoes.  The cargo handled included such items as coal, road salt, gypsum, and coke. In 1999, the Port of Searsport also handled over 3 million barrells of liquid petroleum products

The Penobscot marine Museum faithfully recalls this heritage. In 1747, when fire destroyed the Province House in Boston, General Samuel Waldo advocated, unsuccessfully, that the capital of Massachusetts be moved to Searsport. The Museum, Maine's Oldest Maritime Museum, was founded in 1936 by descendants of Searsport sea captain families. The original building was Old Town Hall, built in 1845 and given to the Museum by the town of Searsport to display our initial collection. Within the decade, we had outgrown this building; over the years, we have grown to encompass a total of 13 buildings, eight of which are on the National Historic Register. Designed as a unique 19 century seafaring village, the museum encompasses 13 historic and modern buildings, houses a modern exhibit gallery features annual shows and is home to a regionally important library and archives focused on maritime history and regional genealogy

Searsport was settled in the 1670s and incorporated on February 13, 1845 from portions of Prospect and Belfast. The town is known as "the home of the famous sea captains" and the "Antique Capital of Maine." Between 1810 and 1890, more than 200 ships slid down the ways in Searsport and in 1887 alone, more than 1,200 vessels arrived in local ports.

Sam Houston, one of the first residents of Searsport; a bodyguard to General George Washington; is depicted in the Washington Crosses the Delaware painting.

Searsport Harbor

The Port of Searsport, located in Waldo County, consists of the Sprague Energy Terminal on Mack Point. the facility is being redeveloped in partnership with the MDOT over the next two (2) years. This will ensure that the facilities will remain competitive for years to come.

In the mid-1800's in Searsport, there were eight shipbuilding yards which built wooden vessels of exceptional quality. While residents built the ships, they sailed them as well. Searsport was home to one-tenth of the deep water captains in the American Merchant Marine, and produced more shipmasters per square mile than any town of its size in the world. Searsport's presence as a major seaport has been long and successful.
